Changzhou hits new export milestone: BYD’s record-breaking NEVs set sail on global voyage
Font:〖L M S

The BYD Shenzhen, currently the world’s largest pure-car-and-truck-carrier (PCTC) by capacity, recently embarked on its maiden overseas voyage fully loaded with over 7,000 Chinese-made new energy vehicles (NEVs). The vessel will transit the Strait of Malacca, cross the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, and ultimately dock at Brazil’s Port of Itajai—a key hub in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Notably, exported models such as the ATTO 3 (Yuan series) and Seagull were manufactured at BYD’s Changzhou base.

Since the start of this year, Phase I of BYD’s Changzhou facility has been operating at full capacity, achieving a record monthly output of 35,000 vehicles in March. In Q1 2024, the base produced 78,000 NEVs, marking an 80 percent year-on-year surge, with exports exceeding 6 billion yuan (up 236 percent). Flagship models like the Seal, Sea Lion, Seagull, and Yuan Plus have become core export drivers, steadily unlocking overseas market growth.

The BYD Shenzhen was officially delivered and departed from Jinling Shipyard in Yizheng, Jiangsu province, on April 22. The NEVs onboard were sourced from BYD’s nationwide production network, including its Changzhou plant.

This seamless coordination among automakers, ships, and ports underscores the robust maturity of China’s NEV supply chain. BYD plans to deploy eight custom-built ro-ro vessels, four of which—named after the company’s production hubs (BYD Changzhou, BYD Hefei, and BYD Shenzhen)—have already been delivered.

The BYD Changzhou, the second vessel in this fleet with 7,000 CEU (car equivalent units), entered service in late 2023 to accelerate global market expansion. Meanwhile, the BYD Shenzhen—equipped with dual-fuel LNG propulsion, BYD’s battery systems, and other cutting-edge technologies—is the fourth PCTC wholly operated by BYD. At 219 meters long and 37.7 meters wide (equivalent to 18 parked cars side-by-side), it boasts a staggering capacity of 9,200 vehicles.

The commissioning of vessels like BYD Changzhou and BYD Shenzhen not only represents a critical milestone in BYD’s global strategy but also signals a paradigm shift in NEV exports. These "maritime bridges" efficiently connect "Intelligent Chinese Manufacturing" with international markets, empowering Changzhou-made NEVs to ride the wave of globalization and tap into BRI-related demand.
