On February 19, according to the Changzhou Investigation Team of the National Bureau of Statistics, the Engel coefficient of urban residents in Changzhou, as an imporatant indicator of people’s livelihood, was dropping year by year before 2010. However, this coefficient began to rebound from 2011. In 2011, the Engel coefficient reached 35.8%, increased by 3.1 percentage points compared to 2010. It reached 36.9% in 2012, an increase of 1.1 percentage points over 2011.
Analysis of the Investigation Team indicates two causes of this increase, i.e. the rapid increase of food expenditure and the special consumption of households.
